Itwashardtogeteverythingdown(especiallywithBilly,whoisafasttalker!)andremembertheotherwriter’squestions,etc.(Iintendtogetaflipcameraforthefuture).Anyway,it’shardtoputthisinaquestion/answerformat,soI’mjustgoingtosummarizeandparaphrasewhattheyeachsaid.Billywassosweetlyenthusiasticandexcitedabouthislife.Somuchfuntotalkto!Firstthingsfirst-SYTYCD,sincethat’showmostpeopleknowhim.Hesaidhedefinitelyplanstoreturntotheshownextseason.Theproducerstoldhimhe’llbeautomaticallyadvancedtothetop100-sohe’llstartoutattheVegasauditionsandgofromthere.HehadtoleavetheshowatthebeginningofthisseasonafterbeingdiagnosedwithMononucleosis.Theproblemwasn’tthathewascontagiousanylongerbythetimehewasdiagnosed,butthattheillnesshadsignificantlyenlargedhisspleen,andheevenhadtobehospitalized.Doctorstoldhimifhemovedtoomuchwithhisspleensoenlarged,hecouldhaveruptureditanddied.Itwouldlikelytakeafewmonthsforthespleentoreturntonormalsize,theysaid,whichiswhyhehadtoleavetheshowatthatpoint.Now,it’snearlybacktonormalthoughit’sstillaslightbitenlarged.“That’swhyIwasn’treallydancingfull-out,”hesaidwithalittlelaugh,referringtotherehearsalwe’djustseen.DanceSpiritwomanandInearlyfelloffthecouchatthis.“Ifthatwasn’tfullout,Ican’timaginewhatyounormallylooklike!”shesaid.AndIagreed.Heseemedcompletelyhealedtome,tomakeamassiveunderstatement.Iaskedhimhowhegotstartedindance.Hesaidhestartedlate,inhighschool,andheactuallybeganwithHipHop.Hislackofearlytrainingdidn’tmatterforthatdancebecause,unlikeballetforexample,themovementisn’tcodified.ButhesoonbecameinterestedinJazz,forwhichheneededballettraining.Heinitiallylearnedbymimickingmovement,buthesoonenrolledintheballetacademyatBalletFloridaand,inordertomakeupforlosttime,reallythrewhimselfintoit,movingveryclosetothestudioandtakingseveralhoursofdanceperday,alongwithhisotherstudies.Afterawhileofballet,hebecameinterestedintap,andsobegantraininginthattoo.He’sinterestedinmultipledanceformsbutconsidershismainstyletobecontemporaryballet.Iaskedhimwhohisfavoritedancerswereorifhehadanyparticularheroesorsourcesofinspiration.HeimmediatelynamedAndreaMiller,choreographeranddirectorofGallimDance,whomhecalledhis“personalmentor.”He’sworkedwithherbefore-whenhewas18,hisfirstproexperience—andheperformedherworkattheJoyceSoHo.Helovesherapproachtomovementandhowsheteaches:shewantsyoutoexperiencethemovementinyourbody,hesaid;it’snotjustaboutthepositions,butabouthowthemovementmakesyoufeel.He’sexcitedtobeabletoworkwithheragainatJuilliard;she’stosetapiecetheresoon.Iaskedhimwhatotherchoreographersorcompanieshe’dliketoworkwith.InadditiontoGallim,henamedWilliamForsytheandOhadNaharin’sBatsheva.Hefindsinthis“dancetheater”anoutersimplicityandyetsomuchcomplexitybehindit.“What’sgoingoninsideyou-(withGallimandNaharin’sGagatraining)-issimpleandyetsocomplex.”HewouldalsolovetodosomePaulTaylor,MerceCunningham,JoseLimon,JeromeRobbins,tonameafew.Buthisbiggestpassion:choreographing.Hewantstodancewhilehe’syoungbuteventuallyhisgoalistocreatedances.Hesaidwithalaughthatheloves“destroyingballet”-kindofbendingthoserodsballetdancersseemtoholduptheirspinesandfreeingthemup,allowingthemtogobackandforthbetweendifferentkindsofmovement.Helovesbeingabletoworkwithdancersandbringcertainthingsoutinthem.Hestrivestomovepeopleemotionally,tomovetheaudience,heloveshavingthatpower.Hechoreographedhisfirstpiece—15minuteslong—atDreyfoos,hishighschoolbackinFlorida.ItwasperformedthereatashowinJanuary.Butthat’sinthefuture.Inthemeantime,he’sfinishingupatJuilliard(he’sabouthalfwaythroughhisBFA;hasanothercoupleyearstogo),hehastheSYTYCDVegasauditionscomingupnextseason,he’sparticipatinginachoreographiccompetitionthattravelsthroughouttheStates,andhejustbecameaprincipaldanceratDeMathismonth.DespinaSimegiatos,oneoftheartisticdirectorsofDeMa,saysbackwhenshewaslookingforstrongmaledancersforherfledglingcompany,shefoundhi
